Rezo Gabriadze Clock Tower
Tbilisi
Hidden among the narrow streets of Old Tbilisi, the Rezo Gabriadze Clock Tower is one of the city's most distinctive and enchanting landmarks. A place where art, theatre, and the unique spirit of Tbilisi come together, the tower feels as though it has stepped directly out of a fairytale and found its home among the historic streets of the old city.
The tower was created by the renowned Georgian artist, writer, director, and founder of the Marionette Theatre, Rezo Gabriadze. Completed in 2010, it became part of the complex surrounding the Rezo Gabriadze Marionette Theatre. Although relatively new compared to Tbilisi's ancient monuments, the tower quickly became one of the city's most recognisable symbols.
Its charm lies in its unconventional architecture. The structure appears to be assembled from fragments of different eras small balconies, leaning walls, painted doors, and handmade ceramic details create a unique visual world that perfectly reflects Gabriadze's artistic imagination. The decorative ceramic tiles adorning the tower were personally designed by the artist, giving the building a deeply personal and artistic character.
The tower's most beloved feature is its small clock and mechanical performance. Every hour, an angel appears from behind a decorated door and gently rings a bell with a small hammer. Twice a day, at 12:00 and 19:00, visitors can witness the short mechanical performance "The Circle of Life", a symbolic story about love, family, and the journey of human life.
What makes the Rezo Gabriadze Clock Tower truly special is that it does not simply imitate the atmosphere of Old Tbilisi it has become a natural part of the old city itself. The tower combines Georgian theatrical traditions, handmade artistry, and one of Tbilisi's most distinctive qualities: the ability to place deep history and gentle humour side by side.
Today, the clock tower is one of the most photographed and beloved landmarks in Tbilisi. Visitors come not only to admire its unusual architecture but also to experience the feeling it creates the sense that there are still places in the city where imagination, creativity, and art can transform everyday life.
